Tiger Cowrie Shell ~ Size: 8 - 10cm

Classification: Cypraea tigris

This is quite a heavy thick shiny shell, with beautiful markings where some of this species are highly valuable.

The shell has a rounded belly, it's base is flat, or slightly curved and you can clearly see the teeth on the shells upper lip, which are broader than the lower teeth. The spotted blob brown patterns are somewhat crowed and run throughout the shell towards the teeth where the blobs thin out towards the base which is usually white.

The overall colour under the brown spotted blob pattern is a cream/yellow in colour.

As you can see from the pictures, the pattern and colour vary from shell to shell.

The cowrie shell has many associations throughout history across the globe.

One of the main symbols this shell represents is female power and fertility.

A seashell therapy healing grid pack is available with this shell.

Tiger Cowrie Shell

  • Ecological Note

This very popular locally abundant shell is found in the shallow waters throughout the Indo-Pacfic region, from Africa to Hawaii. I

t's size is usually 8-10 cms long, but much larger shells have been found, especially of the Hawaiian Islands.

Cowries feed at night, venturing out from under rocks for protection from larger predators, where it mainly feeds on reefs for algae and sponges.

  • Seashell Therapy

The cowrie shell is a gastropod. In seashell healing the gastropod represents a more intense energy and can be placed anywhere on the body, or directed to an area of pain.

I use the tiger cowrie for emotional issues and physical pain for the lower chakra - base (red), sacral (orange) and solar (yellow).

The energy of the cowrie is strong but calming, and can be used to scoop out unwanted energy from the aura.

From the shape and shiny texture of this shell, it is a very good `tool` for body massages to relive tension.

Also available in a seashell therapy grid healing pack.
